OVERVIEW

In your own words, what is different about DRDA? (What stands out to you about the firm’s culture, mission, or team?)

Most advisory firms have an “armchair quarterback” mentality meaning they will show you the “what” without ensuring proper follow through on the “how.” DRDA impressed me right from the beginning in both strategy and implementation. DRDA has been among the cutting edge in strategy development tailored to unique situations, but also proper implementation. We do not simply explain strategies to clients and leave them to figure out implementation but take that task head on.

What do you find most rewarding about your role (or being an accountant, if applicable)? (What gives you satisfaction or purpose in your work?)

I find explaining new strategies and opportunities the most rewarding part of my job as an advisor. The moment where clients realize that tax planning is a legitimate way to add to their bottom line rather than looking at tax strictly as a set mandatory cost of doing business.

How did you choose your career path (or how did you get into accounting)? (Tell us what inspired or led you here.)

I originally got my start with the IRS VITA program back in 2007 and never looked back. I’ve done a few internships prior to attending law school at Michigan State and while in law school worked at the IRS Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) for several semesters. At the conclusion of law school I worked primarily in compliance and controversy for several years prior to getting into advisory a few years ago. While I truly have a passion for all things tax, I have to say my favorite part of my career thus far has been my time spent in advisory.

In your own words, what is your job description? (Describe what you do and how you help clients or the team.)

Simply put, my job is to craft and implement a plan around client businesses that will both mitigate taxes and meet client lifestyle needs.

Practice Areas or Focus Areas: (List your areas of expertise, services, or types of clients you work with.)

Employer stock plans, rental real estate, changes in accounting methods, active trader and 475(f) elections, acquisitions, legal income shifting, qualified opportunity funds, Section 105 medical reimbursements, and optimal business structuring to name a few.

Personal Insights

What is your hidden talent or something unique about you? (This could be a skill, hobby, or fun fact.)

In addition to being a full-time tax advisor here at DRDA, I’m also an officer in the Michigan Army National Guard. My prior assignments include commanding a rocket artillery battery and deploying to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? (Hobbies, family time, community involvement, etc.)

Family time is very important to me and at least weekly I like to see my two older brothers for a good board game session.

Where did you grow up or go to school? (Optional — helps make bios more personal.)

I grew up in Sterling Heights, Michigan and did both undergrad and law school at Michigan State University. I also hold a Masters in Accounting from Oakland University.

Favorite snack, movie, or hobby (optional but fun!):

My favorite hobby is bike riding.
