Business Advisory
Case Study
Kenneth Hall & David Hall; Business Owners
Owner Review
By working with my advisor from DRDA for just six weeks, I was able to make significant progress on delegating major responsibilities to my COO for my business. Mack was able to guide me through identifying major pain areas to ensure that typical challenges have action plans, such as how to deal with HR issues and terminations.
The DRDA Advising Process for nGenue Software
nGenue Software, a Houston-based international software provider for retail and wholesale natural gas solutions, has built a strong reputation as a trusted platform for natural gas marketers and utilities. Founded and co-owned by brothers Ken Hall (CEO) and David Hall (Product Manager), the company has experienced consistent growth and an expanding global footprint.
However, with that growth came increasing complexity and leadership strain.
As CEO, Ken was managing critical executive decisions across operations, HR, and sales—while also serving as the face of the company’s strategic direction. Although nGenue had a capable leadership team, Ken found himself heavily involved in tactical problem-solving, leaving little time for high-level planning and growth initiatives.
The company faced classic “growth stage” challenges:
Ken knew that to take nGenue to its next phase, he needed to delegate more effectively, empower his COO, and build a leadership framework that could scale beyond him.
Senior Business Advisor Mack Miller engaged with Ken through DRDA’s Business Advisory Program, focusing on leadership alignment, delegation systems, and strategic clarity. Over six weeks, their sessions uncovered key operational pain points and developed actionable plans to address them.
01
Mack guided Ken through a structured discovery process to map all executive-level responsibilities currently flowing through his office. This exercise revealed critical areas where decisions and communications could be delegated to his COO without loss of control.
02
Together, they developed an intentional delegation plan defining what to delegate, delay, or directly manage. This framework empowered Ken to trust his COO with key operational functions—particularly around HR management, employee terminations, and performance accountability.
03
Mack helped Ken gain clarity on nGenue’s sales structure, including defining ideal sales roles, compensation models, and the cultural fit required for successful hires. This step was crucial in transforming sales from an informal function into a structured, growth-oriented apparatus.
04
Through weekly advisory sessions, Ken implemented new executive meeting rhythms, accountability scorecards, and decision filters to ensure high-value focus and smarter executive choices.
In just six weeks, Ken reported measurable improvement in executive clarity, confidence, and operational flow. He successfully delegated several key responsibilities to his COO, freeing time to focus on strategic vision, partner relationships, and business growth initiatives.
More importantly, Ken described the advisory relationship as a trusted partnership—one that provided not just external accountability, but seasoned insight grounded in real-world leadership experience.
“By working with my advisor from DRDA for just six weeks, I was able to make significant progress on delegating major responsibilities to my COO. Mack helped me identify pain areas, build action plans for HR challenges, and clarify key hiring decisions. I now have a trusted advocate for my business and a clearer path toward smarter executive decisions, intentional leadership, and scalable growth.”
— Ken Hall, CEO, nGenue Software
While still in early stages, nGenue is now laying the groundwork for a more autonomous, scalable leadership model—positioned for continued growth, stability, and long-term value creation for both founders.
